Puno is handily compact. If you have energy to spare, you can walk into the center from the port or the bus terminals. To get to the port or lake on foot, walk east from the Plaza de Armas along Jirón Puno, which becomes Avenida Del Puerto to the port. Everything in the town center is within easy walking distance. Lima, the main pedestrian street, fills in the early evening as puneños (inhabitants of Puno) come out to promenade.
A short taxi ride anywhere in town (and as far as the transportation terminals) costs S5. Mototaxis (three-wheeled motorcycle rickshaw taxis) are a bit cheaper at S2.50, and triciclos (three-wheeled cycles) cheapest of all, at S2 – but it’s an uphill ride, so you may find yourself wanting to tip the driver more than the cost of the fare!
