The 'City of Orchids' welcomes you to Peru’s jungle region with a florid flourish. Moyobamba, the capital of the department of San Martín, might not be Arequipa or even Cajamarca in the architectural stakes (earthquakes have contributed to the demise of most of its historic buildings), but with its intimate Plaza de Armas, easily accessible viewpoints and little hidden secrets (excellent coffee!), it’s worth a stopover.
Tourist authorities, working together with local communities, have developed a number of ecological activities in the area, including hiking, river-boat trips and appreciation of the town’s emblematic orchids. To many travelers, Moyobamba offers a quieter, more intimate antidote to Tarapoto – the town's larger, much noisier eastern cousin.
