The ramshackle brick-and-mud village of Llamac was once the launching point for the Huayhuash Circuit but now that the public bus continues on to the trailhead at Pocpa, closer to the Matacancha rest site, many hikers only visit Llamac to pick up transport back to Chiquián upon exiting the circuit.
There are few services here, though there’s a small Plaza de Armas with a diminutive church draped in bougainvillea. The trail leading to Laguna Yahuacocha sits behind the municipal building on the same plaza.
There is a S20 entry fee for foreigners to enter Huayhuash, the first in the fee circuit. You will be expected to pay even if just passing through on the bus – hold on to your receipt to avoid paying again when you finish your trek.
