During March, Lima, like so many other cosmopolitan cities, will turn International Women’s Day (March 8) into a month-long celebration.

The next four weeks offer you a chance to catch a breathtaking performance piece, chat with national-gone-international entrepreneurs, peruse through the work of local rising talents and be inspired to become your own maker. Women are making waves in Peru’s coastal city, and these events prove it.

Somos Muchas

Connect, inspire, empower. That’s the aim of this three-day festival that brings together independent female artists and entrepreneurs to share their projects. Behind the event is the Lima edition of Ladies, Wine & Design, an international initiative to encourage women to pursue careers in the art and design sector. Free and open to all ages, the fair’s first edition and will be held in Espacio Los Unicos, a quaint art space (co-founded by María Teresa Cánepa) that hosts some of the best art related pop-ups in town.

Date: March 1 (5-9pm), March 2-3 (3-9pm)

Place: Espacio Los Unicos, Ramón Ribeyro 1057, Miraflores

Natural Beauty Care Workshop

Be good to your skin and learn to make your own powders and blush, a nourishing eyelash mask, lip balms and more utilizing what nature can provide. Hosted by Misha Rastrera, a leading essential oils and natural health and beauty products company based in Lima, attendees can also learn application techniques and the proper way to recycle empty beauty products containers.

Date: March 2 (11am - 3pm)

Place: Av. Jose Olaya 173, Chorrillos

MATExMarangoni

Thanks to its founder Mario Testino, Lima’s trendiest gallery, MATE, has teamed up with prestigious fashion institute Marangoni to run this five-day educational event. Directed towards a fashion and design-oriented audience, seminars and classes will be led by international and local panels. If Peruvian designers like Chiara Macchiavello (Escudo), Meche Correa, and Mozhdeh Matin (Mozhe Mozhe) aren’t already on your radar, they definitely will be after this inspiring event. Free to public with prior registration.

Date: March 4-8

FAE Lima

Local cultural institutions share hosting duties for Lima’s third annual Festival de Artes Escenicas (Performing Arts Festival), a showcase of standout theatrical talent including six international and eleven national performances. Don’t miss “Proyecto Maternidades,” in which five women share their distinct labor stories (March 12-14), and “Quédense cerca de mí,” inspired by the true story of Mamá Angelica, a mother who, having lost her son to internal terrorism, became a beacon of support to many Peruvians in similar situations (March 8-10).

The World According to Mafalda

The future is female – but Mafalda fans have known that for quite some time now. Launched in 1964, the popular Argentine comic strip starring a well-informed six-year old is making its way to Lima by way of an exposition. Held in the swanky mall Jockey Plaza, the creative work of the comic’s creator and illustrator, Joaquín ‘Quino’ Salvador Lavado Saco, will be on display along with merchandise available for purchase.

Date: March 15 - April 14
