Tour description provided by Viator

If you've got a full day in Lima to spare, this unforgettable tour will take you to eat until you burst in the morning. In the morning you'll visit an authentic Peruvian local market where you'll try dozens of local ingredients, dishes, drinks and products. Our expert guide will tell you more about an array of different regional ingredients most of which are very strictly Peruvian. It will soon become obvious why Lima and Peru have become the food meccas of South America! In the afternoon you'll visit the second largest cemetery in South America on the outskirts of Lima and get to know immigrant neighborhoods that are the reality of the capital beyond the glitz and glamour. You'll learn more about the great work of a grassroots and non-profit NGO and will get to know a local family and engage in inter-cultural exchange like never before.
Your guide will meet you at your hotel at 10am. He'll take you on a short walk towards the market while giving you some background information on Lima, its history, its cultures and how it all manifests in Peruvian dishes. The market is a distinctly Peruvian style neighborhood market with ingredients from the Pacific Coasts, the Andean mountainsides and the Amazon Rainforest. Enjoy tasting regional meals, fruits, cheeses, liquors, drinks and sweets, all the while chatting and laughing with our enthusiastic friends in the market who are always so eager to share their favorite flavors. For seafood lovers and those who will try anything once, we will show you how to prepare a  ceviche in the market itself. You get to select fresh catches of the day that pique your curiosity for your dish (for example fish, scallops, mussels, squid, octopus, abalone, or even sea urchin!) and see on the spot how this timeless Peruvian classic is “cooked.” Carefully pace your eating and always save some room in your stomach! We then continue to meander through the market, tasting a large variety of dried snacks, side dishes, fresh fruits, time-honored liquors that will surely give you a nice jolt and succulent juices you won’t easily find on just any restaurant menu.In the afternoon, we’ll take you to a part of Lima that is very much off the beaten path. Our private van, will pick you up from the market and we'll start heading to neighborhoods that feel very far away from the touristy vibes of Miraflores. First we will visit one of the largest and very unique cemeteries in the world where we'll enjoy some amazing views and learn more about cultural traditions in Peru. The highlight of the tour is the visit to Lima’s Pueblos Jovenes or human settlements. They are the Peruvian favela, where colorful houses of rustic materials are built on the hillsides. These neighborhoods are the poorest areas of the city but at the same time they are rich in diversity and have some of the most hardworking and friendliest people you will ever meet. We focus on optimism and the hope and efforts for a better life for their children while we learn more about their daily lives and about positive initiatives that are changing lives.A local guide will show us around her neighborhood located on the slopes of the sandy hills of Lima’s outskirts and will show you some of the innovative social and environmental projects that have been set up by a local NGO. The aim of this experience is a genuine intercultural experience since we will visit and interact with several locals. We will learn more about daily life in this harsh environment but will also get the chance to be introduced to some of the efforts carried out to improve the situation. Your guide will drop you back off at your hotel at around 5:30pm (exact time depends on traffic conditions).
