Air

Chachapoyas Airport is located 4km northeast of the city center. ATSA Airlines has five flights a week to and from Lima (US$140, 1¾ hours) leaving Chachapoyas at 11:30am. Book tickets online or at the Turismo Explorer office in Plaza de Armas.

Bus

All local and regional transport leaves from Chachapoyas' scruffy beehive of a bus terminal, 1km east of Plaza de Armas. Note that long-distance express buses leave from private terminals around the city.

The frequently traveled route to Chiclayo and on to Lima starts along the vista-lined route to Pedro Ruíz along the Río Utcubamba. The very comfortable Movil Tours has buses to Lima (S130 to S165, 22 hours) at 4pm, Chiclayo (S55 to S75, nine hours) at 8pm, Trujillo (S65 to S85, 14 hours) at 7:30pm, and Jaén (S50, four hours) at 4:30am. Civa has slightly cheaper buses to Chiclayo (S30 to S70, 10 hours, twice daily) and Lima (S100 to S120, 24 hours, once daily).

Virgen del Carmen is the safest operator for the thrilling scenic route between Chachapoyas and Cajamarca (S50, 11 hours) via Leimebamba (S10, 2½ hours) and Celendín (S40, nine hours). There's one bus daily usually leaving in the evening. Another bus heads east to Tarapoto (S35, eight hours).

Also continuing into the Amazon Basin is Turismo Selva running less comfortable minivans to Tarapoto (S35, eight hours) via Moyobamba (S24, six hours) at 6:30am, 8:30am, 10:30am and 12:30pm. There is also a 2:30pm service just to Moyobamba.

For Jaén and its airport, Turismo Explorer runs daily transfer buses (S50, four hours) leaving Chachapoyas at 7am. Buses pick up passengers from the 12:30pm flight and return to Chachapoyas.

Turismo Kuélap runs frequent minibuses from Chachapoyas' main bus terminal to the base of the cable-car station in Nuevo Tingo (S7, one hour). Buses leave when full approximately every half-hour.

Transportes Trotamundo goes several times a day to Leimebamba (S10, two hours) stopping off at Yerbabuena (S8, 1½ hours) and Tingo Viejo (S7, one hour) en route. Mi Cautivo runs a similar service.

ETSA Runs combis (minibuses) between Chachapoyas and Pedro Ruíz (S5, one hour) with a stop at Cocahuayco (S3, 45 minutes) for the Gocta waterfalls. Buses leave when full.
