Specialities of the region are alpaca steaks and fried cuy (guinea pig). Chivay is the only town in the region with good eating choices, though most visitors on tour groups will be ushered into buffets. In small towns the only option may be a family eatery or pollo a la brasa (roast chicken) around the main plaza, especially at night.

Mate de Coca

A cup of mate de coca (coca-leaf tea) is said to cure altitude sickness and is perfectly legal in Peru – though be careful not to bring any back to your home country where it is likely illegal because of the cocaine-like qualities.
