Getting There & Away
There are only three options to get to Aguas Calientes, and hence to Machu Picchu: trek it, catch the train via Cuzco and the Sacred Valley, or travel by road and the Hidroelectrica train via Santa Teresa.
It's a dusty, 12km walk (or taxi ride) from Aguas Calientes along the train tracks to Hidroelectrica, and then a further 9.4km to Santa Teresa (bus and taxi available). Go early and allow two to three hours. Don't bring much luggage and stay alert on the tracks for trains. Landslides make it not advisable to do the walk in rainy season.
