A series of ephemeral saline lakes that form to the east of Loma Plata are a key habitat for migrating birds. Though individual lagoons may be dry for several years between good rainstorms, the birds somehow find them. Laguna Capitán is one of the most accessible.

It is best from May to September when flocks of ducks and flamingos obscure the water. From October to December and March to April they are used by waders on passage. Accommodations are available in dorm rooms with advance booking, and there a kitchen is available for use (100,000G per day).
