Heya, I'll be travelling to Port Moresby, Kimbe, Rabaul and probably New Ireland in July. Any recommendations on where to buy beautiful local carvings and art in any of those places?

Looks like there's not many shops around but not sure if certain villages, guides, contacts are good places to start.

Thanks!

I'm planning on going to Kavieng in July with a friend. I've searched the forum but can only find info regarding beaches and diving/snorkelling. My friend dives but I don't, so we want sea but also land/cultural activities.

I'd be great to hear any recommendations for land tours, village visits, interesting things to see on land in New Ireland and smaller islands.

I've also heard there's interesting traditional art is made in New Ireland. Can anyone recommend where I could see some and maybe…

I'm just back from nearly three weeks in PNG and thought others might benefit from some on-the-ground observations about independent travel there.
The tl;dr version is this:
* PNG is awesome! It has its problems but the dystopian Mad Max reputation I'd heard so much about is overblown and the people are among the loveliest and most friendly I've met. If you travel like the locals, they know the rules and will look after you.
* I didn't see another independent traveller in the entire time I was…

I am going to visit Bougainville in the end of August, to cross the border to the Solomons.

I found this note in UK travel advice:

<< You must provide notice of your intention to visit the island to the Bougainville Provincial Administration (telephone: +675 973 9798), and contact the Administration again upon arrival. >>

Has anybody heard about this? Is there anybody who has done the crossing recently and can provide a feedback?

Thanks!

Dear fellow travellers

Did you have a vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis when travelling around PNG?
I will be spending about 4 days at Sepik area, few at the Highlands and New Ireland/New Britain.

Thank you for recommendations!

Tom

I want to retrace some old steps. Is it practical to hire a self drive vehicle and travel Kainantu, Okapa, Minj and Banz? Please only respond if you have current knowledge of these areas. My main concern is not road conditions, it is security. Thanks in advance.

Just back from the Sepik and as part of our trip we visited Chambri for the first time so here is a short trip report and some tips.

Chambri Lake is a large lake that is part of the Sepik river system. There are three entrances on the north-west near Ambunti, on the north side just east of Pagwi and on the east side near Kamanabit. Water flows into the first two and out the third. All of these entrances are had to find and navigate - do not attempt without a shallow draft canoe and a skipper or…

Hey, I'm flying to Mt Hagen on May 16 and then flying out of Wewak on June 2.
The plan is to see the Tumbuna singsing (on May 18) then climb Mt Wilhelm in the first week and then do some kind of tour on the Sepik in the second week. Apart from the flights and accommodation in Mt Hagen, I haven't booked anything.
This is a bit of a long shot but in case there's someone else around then who wants to combine to save money on either of these, I hope to hear from you. My travel style is definitely…

Hi all,

After long time reading, dreaming and planning, I am going to PNG in August with a friend (both of us are females).
The itinerary is New Ireland (biking the Boluminski highway), Mt. Hagen Show and a short Sepik River tour with Johannes Teven.
The internal flights (and most external) are booked as well as the itinerary with Johannes and accommodation in MT. Hagen, but I still have some doubts for the remaining planning:

  1. do you have any accommodation reccommendations for Wewak and…

What interesting things can be visited in New Britain besides Rabaul? I see that for instance there is an airport called Hoskins that is connected both to Port Moresby and Rabaul, so it's possible to fly there, spend 2-3 days and then fly over to Rabaul, instead than flying directly.

I really can't find any information about can be found there, except that there is a huge marine park in Kimbe bay (but the bay is large and I don't know specifically how to visit it). Also, I see that there is a…
