The beaches around Kokopo are nothing to write home about. If you’re after that perfect beach or a good snorkelling spot, it’s worth considering taking a day trip to the Duke of York Islands. The best place to soak up the atmosphere is the waterfront, where banana boats (speed boats) pull up on the east end of the beach and their drivers wait for a fare or go fishing. These boats come and go from all over the province, the Duke of Yorks and New Ireland.
You can arrange tours at Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort, Taklam Lodge, Rapopo Plantation Resort, Gazelle International Hotel and Kokopo Village Resort. Popular excursions (half/full day from K240/360 for one, less per person as group size increases) travel from Kokopo to Rabaul, taking in all the sights along the way, including Mt Vulcan and the Submarine Base and tunnels. Harbour cruises are also available.
Drinking & Nightlife
If all you need is a cold beer and a chilled-out vibe, the bars at Rapopo Plantation Resort, Gazelle International, Queen Emma Lodge, Kokopo Village Resort and Kokopo Beach Bungalow Resort are worth investigating.
