Car & PMV
Goroka is well served by PMVs and the Highlands (Okuk) Hwy. It’s an easy trip to Mt Hagen (K30, four hours) via Kundiawa (K15, two hours) in the west, or down to the coastal cities of Lae (K40, five hours) and Madang (K50, five hours) in the east.
PMVs gather near the market area early in the morning, and more leave as the day wears on. A dedicated PMV bus station is being planned and may be in use by the time you read this. The road out to Mt Hagen is fairly flat through Asaro, but it then hairpins its way up to Daulo Pass (2450m). The pass is cold and damp, but the views are spectacular.
Although the town is small enough to walk around, PMVs run up and down the stretch of main road, Edwards Rd, aka Highlands (Okuk) Hwy, and to the university (K1).
