Bougainville in detail
The most convenient way to get around Bougainville Island is by PMV. There’s only one main gravel road, running down the east coast to Arawa and Kieta, and on to Buin to the south.
Regular PMVs ply the route between Kokopau and Arawa (K50, 3½ hours), where you can continue on to Buin (K70, another four to five hours).
Air Niugini Flies directly between Kieta and Port Moresby (K1007, two hours, three or four times a week) and Kokopo/Rabaul (K660, 55 minutes, three times a week).
