Amritsar, in north-west India, is a vibrant, relaxed and gracious city. It is most famous for the spectacular Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion, whose golden exterior shimmers in a pool of sacred water. Sacked by the Afghans in 1761, the shrine was rebuilt by the Sikhs’ greatest secular leader, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He donated the gold top, believed to be gilded with 100kg of pure gold, which gave it the name Swaran Mandir or Golden Temple. On this 2-night tour, witness the holy evening ceremony at the Golden Temple, visit the Jallianwala Bagh memorial, enjoy cycle-rickshaw ride in the vibrant bazaars and gorge on to the rich and traditional cuisine of Amritsar.
