Getting There & Away
Mwasalat buses run from Muscat’s Azaiba Bus Station (OR4) daily at either 9.40am or 10.40am, returning at either 4.15pm or 5.15pm. The journey (450km, six hours) is via Sinaw, Mahout and Hijj.
There's no public transport along the Dunes Rd. From Al Ashkharah it's a two-hour drive (175km) to the ferry in Shana'a.
Ferries for the island of Masirah leave from Shana'a Port several times a day more or less when full.
South of Mahout, Hwy 32 leads to Duqm, with beautiful beaches lying a short distance from the main road at Filim, Khaluf, Sarab and Ras Sidrah. However, it is best, even in a 4WD, to drive along Hwy 32 and make sidetrips to the shore rather than risk getting stuck in soft sand and sabkha on the erratic coastal tracks.
