Dunes Road

Top choice Scenic Drive

in Shana'a

Dubbed the Dunes Rd, this feat of engineering cuts a corridor through the auburn Sharqiya Sands and is almost a destination in its own right. The road links Al Ashkharah with Shana’a, the ferry terminal for Masirah, and leads on to the small towns of Hijj and Mahout. The whole route is laced with beautiful beaches.

Crossing some of the most inhospitable terrain in the country, the road passes small fishing villages, outcrops of aeolite (fossilised sand) blown into extraordinary formations, and the tracks of the Bedouin, which ignore the road and continue across it as if it were a minor interruption to age-old caravan routes.
