Welcome to Hamhung
North Korea’s massively industrial second city, Hamhung (함흥), has been open to tour groups since 2012 and is a fascinating place to get a look at a real North Korean city, far away from the glittering capital. Here, locals will look astounded to see you and you'll almost certainly be the only foreigners in town. Tours of Hamhung generally include visiting a fertiliser factory, the city's main theatre and a nearby collective farm.
Bucolic it isn't, however, with suburbs made up of factory after factory and bad air pollution from all the industry. But even by North Korean standards, this is definitely getting off the beaten path.
