Wawa is a scenic Miskito village 17km south of Bilwi, at the mouth of the Río Wawa. There’s a beautiful lagoon packed with migratory birds and alligators, plus a sandy oceanfront beach. Further upriver is Karatá, which is perched on the edge of the lagoon and surrounded by mangrove forests. Hiking, fishing and canoeing options abound in both villages.
