It’s a smooth, paved 80km from Chinandega through mostly empty grazing land to the border town of Somotillo, though you will see signs for Reserva Genetica Apacunaca (Apacunaca Genetic Resource Reserve). There’s almost no tourist infrastructure, which is sort of the point. It protects one of four known caches of teosinte (wild corn) in the world, only discovered here in the late 1990s.
If you’re not deeply interested in corn, then there's little reason to come here, unless you're crossing the border into Honduras. Somotillo is a busy service town 6km away from the border town of El Guasaule, with very few attractions. If you happen to briefly get stuck here, hire one of the numerous pedicabs to take you on a grand tour, perhaps of its two churches.
