Matagalpa's most popular hiking trail leads from Finca San Luis, a 20-minute walk (or US$1 taxi ride) south of Parque Rubén Darío, into this reserve. It’s a two-hour round-trip hike to the mirador (viewpoint). If you’re aiming for the misty, 1442m-high peak, it’s best to hire a guide.
There is an alternative trail up to the cross atop the mountain, which leaves from near the monastery in the south of town. It's an easier hike but the nature is less impressive. There are two other entrances to different sectors of the park: one is just north of town on the road to El Tuma; the other is on the road to Guadalupe, off the Matagalpa–Muy Muy road.
