On Thursdays and Sundays at noon, La Costeña Airlines flies 12-seater aircraft from Managua to La Paloma Airport (around US$80, 20 minutes) – an airstrip some 2km south of Moyogalpa. From Ometepe, the flights continue to San Carlos and San Juan del Norte.
Up to 15 boats and ferries ply the 17km route daily between San Jorge on the mainland and the Moyogalpa ferry terminal, Ometepe's main port. Departures are between 7am and 5:45pm (US$1.50 to US$3, one hour); some are more reliable than others. There are departures from San Jorge to the San José del Sur ferry terminal at 9:30am, 2pm and 5pm. Between November and February, winds can make the sea rough, particularly in the afternoon; consider taking a car ferry instead of a smaller boat. The Ferry Schedules page on www.ometepenicaragua.com has up-to-date departure information.
Most boats can transport bikes and other equipment without a problem. If you're loading your car onto the ferry, you might have to wait, depending on availability; otherwise, no reservations are required. Passengers pay on the boat.
