Almost everything grown on Ometepe is organically farmed, simply because fertilizers are unnecessary in the rich volcanic soil and pesticides are prohibitively expensive. Its rice and beans are considered the country’s best. Some of the best food is found in Balgüe and on eco-farms near Mérida, with good restaurants at some hotels along Playa Santo Domingo as well. The dining scenes in Moyogalpa and Altagracia are okay but not terribly exciting.
