Welcome to Around Granada
Even on the shortest trip through Granada, you'll understand why Nicaragua's nickname is the 'land of lakes and volcanoes.' Volcán Mombacho and the gorgeous crater lake of Laguna de Apoyo are both within easy proximity of the city, accessible on day trips – either DIY or organized by tour outfitters – from town. Mombacho, active and often shrouded with clouds, is a great destination for quiet hiking and birdwatching. If you have time to spare, spend the night at one of the hotels or hostels on the shores of the lake: an early morning dip in these clean, clear waters is a rare pleasure. Also in this region you'll find the dormant volcano on the little-visited island of Zapatera on Lago de Nicaragua, as well as dozens of tiny islands and islets that make up the Isletas de Granada – a tranquil archipelago that seems a world away from bustling Granada.
