A news report about an American tourist marrying a Bangladeshi rickshaw driver after being impressed with his honesty has been exposed as a hoax, after the ‘wedding photo’ was found to be a snap from a TV reality show.
The alleged bride, actually US Fullbright scholar Pauline Shoemaker, posed with the rickshaw driver as part of the Ittadi TV show, but the encounter was spun into a story of love crossing social and cultural divides, and was picked up by a string of news sites in Bangladesh, becoming a huge hit on social media.
