
The Villarrica volcano in southern Chile erupted early Tuesday morning, sending ash and lava 3300 ft into the air. Some 3000 people have been evacuated from the vicinity. The volcano, a popular hiking destination, has a lava lake in its crater and it has not erupted since 1985. The volcano is now in a passive state, according to Pucon mayor Carlos Parra.
