The US Navy has agreed to limit sonar and other training exercises that can harm marine mammals off the coast of Hawaii and California.

As part of a recent settlement agreement between the Navy and environmental groups, the ban includes limits on mid-frequency sonar and explosives practice in areas known to contain whales. An attorney for an environmental group said the sonar can cause deafness in nearby whales, and the Navy estimates that the use of explosives could inadvertently kill 155 marine mammals off the coast of Hawaii and Southern California.
