Sharks might be a cause of concern for people swimming off the Southern California coast, but one recently caught shark has shown that what they should really be worried about is the dangerously bad water quality in the sea there.

Investigators found levels of DDT, PCBs and mercury in the dead shark’s system that are far higher than you’d want them to be. Although the industrial plants responsible for pumping these chemicals into the sea have been closed for years, scientists say that they remain at very high levels in the sea and work their way up the marine food chain.
