A coffeehouse that was a meeting place for Shanghai’s Jewish community during World War II has been rebuilt.
The White Horse Inn opened in 1939 and served the city’s 30,000-strong community of Jews throughout the 1940s as a cafe, meeting place, nightclub and bar. It was demolished in 2009 by developers, but has been rebuilt close to Shanghai’s Jewish Museum. The interiors were modelled on the original cafe, and the owners hope the cafe will not only be a place for refreshments, but a space to educate people about Shanghai’s history.
