Authorities in Shanghai have cancelled the annual Lantern Festival after rumours it was to be shuttered in the wake of the New Year’s Eve stampede disaster that killed 36 people. The festival, which was scheduled to begin on 19 February, has been held for two decades at Yuyuan Garden and last year attracted around 1.5 million visitors over three days.
