
One of Mexico’s most important religious festivals reaches its peak tomorrow in the country’s capital. The Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe) takes place on 12 December in Mexico City’s Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and is the culmination of a month of religious festivities. The site has been sacred since the the 16th century when a vision of the Virgin led to a church being built on the site, and one tradition of the festival includes pilgrims completing the last leg of their journey to the shrine on their knees.
