An extremely rare albino sperm whale has been spotted by tourists and researchers on a whale-watching excursion in the Caprera Canyon area off Sardinia’s northeastern coast.

The whale, which surfaced for 15 minutes, has been named Moby Dick by researchers, after the white whale in Herman Melville’s famous novel. It’s the first white whale sighting in the Mediterranean since one was spotted off Sardinia’s Tavolara Island nine years ago. Northeastern Sardinia is a hot spot for whale watching, inhabited by eight different cetacean species. Read more: ansa.it
