Flights have been cancelled, roads washed out and trains delayed during heavy rainstorms that have pummelled Hong Kong, Taiwan and parts of southern China over the weekend. On Tuesday, Hong Kong Observatory issued a black alert – the highest in its three-tier rainstorm warning system – for the first time this year. Around 170 flights at Hong Kong airport were cancelled or delayed. Meanwhile, heavy rains also hit southern Taiwan, causing delays to trains and damage to crops, as well as concerns over an outbreak of dengue fever, as mosquitoes are prone to breed in standing water.
