Unesco investigators have dismissed claims by a team of explorers who believed they discovered Captain Kidd’s famous 17th Century pirate shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar.

The 50kg bar of "silver treasure", which was presented to Madagascar's president at a special ceremony in May after being recovered from the sea, was in fact 95% lead. The technical team from Unesco, the UN's cultural arm, noted that while there were several historic wrecks in the bays of Sainte-Marie island, the latest discovery was actually a broken part of the Sainte-Marie port constructions.
