A dam holding back toxic waste burst in Brazil's Minas Gerais state on Thursday, inundating the colonial town of Mariana.
So far, 16 people have died and several others are missing. Thick red mud surged into the city from the hilly outskirts, engulfing vehicles and destroying homes. Fear of landslides has hampered rescue efforts, but stranded residents are being evacuated from the area by helicopter. The cause of the dam's breach is not yet known. Read more: bbc.com
