If you’re travelling with limited cash – or simply looking to prolong a stay for as long as possible – then a budgeting app might be just the thing you need.

Trail Wallet for iPhones and iPads is one of the best available keeping you up to date on exactly how much you have spent so far.

It was created by Simon Fairbairn and Erin McNeaney of Never Ending Voyage, who have been travelling full time since 2010 … and therefore know a thing or two about managing finances on a trip.

At the start of your holiday, you simply input the amount you have and it will work out a rough daily allowance of what’s available.

As you spend, there’s a quick add button, which means it takes just a second to add in the cost of lunch, dinner, or a taxi fare, taking the pain of what otherwise could be a distraction during what is after all supposed to be relaxation time.

If you underspend for a few days, your daily allowance will go up and conversely if you splurge on an expensive meal, it will be clear that it is time to cut back.

The app has in-built features to deal with any currency confusion, and can quickly convert back to home currency if needs be.

Unless you have a suitcase full of cash it might be wise to budget. 

Trail Wallet is not the only option and the Travel Budget App offers many similar features for watching the pennies and cents while away.

Expensify is another app, widely used in the professional world, for employees to keep tabs on their work expenses.

It also offers help for keeping tabs on costs while travelling, and will also keep an up to date itinerary so that all-important flight and transport plans are never more than a touch away.
