A South Korean dessert snack that has become beloved in North Korea has been copied in the Hermit Kingdom. Choco Pies, which have become a substitute for hard cash in some parts of North Korea, were invented in the 1970s by a South Korean confectionary company after a member of their team was inspired by chocolate sweets at a hotel in the U.S. Choco Pies are often sold on the black market in North Korea, despite the country’s attempts to ban them.
