The heaviest rainfall in over a century has returned Chennai to disaster mode, with flooding reported across the city.
The Adyar River has burst its banks and the runways at the city’s international airport have been submerged since Tuesday, with all flights rerouted to other airports in South India. Dozens of trains have been delayed and cancelled, and road transport is also severely impacted by the flooding. The army, navy, coast guard and National Disaster Response Force have been called in to help evacuate people from flooded areas in the city’s worst natural disaster for generations.
