A new website is offering discounted rates to travelers based on their popularity on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Hotelied , whose marketing motto is 'It pays to be you', has a simple premise: the more followers a traveler has on social media platforms, the deeper the discounts he or she can book at a select list of luxury hotels.
The site is a year old, and its inventory is limited to a somewhat haphazard assortment of 34 destinations in the Western Hemisphere, ranging from Miami Beach to Stockholm to Punta del Este, Uruguay. Each hotel sets its own scale for how popular someone has to be on social media to receive a discount, but discounts typically range between 5% and 20% off rates that are usually available online.
In a recent test, a traveler with about 10,000 followers on Twitter used Hotelied to find a 20% off discount on an early June stay at the Dream Downtown in New York City. Hotelied also takes into account any loyalty rewards or status levels a traveler may have with hotel chains as it searches for the best deal.
