Archaeologists have discovered a significant number of previously unknown buildings at Old Sarum, an abandoned medieval city near Salisbury in southwestern England. The buildings were discovered using the latest scanning techniques – including magnetometry, earth resistance and ground-penetrating radar – meaning no digging was required. Living spaces, kilns, furnaces and large structures that may have been used for defence have all been found. Old Sarum was a major medieval city, but its power waned in the thirteenth century when a new cathedral was built in New Sarum – modern Salisbury. Read more: bbc.co.uk
