
Nepal has followed the example of India, Australia and New Zealand by officially recognising transgender people as a third gender. In future, Nepali citizens will be able to have their gender recorded as male, female or an unspecified third gender - the official title is yet to be decided - on all official documents, including passports. Transgender people have traditionally been marginalised in Nepali society, with many forced to work in prostitution, despite the tradition of inviting metis (the Nepali term for transgender people) to bless wedding ceremonies.
