The death toll from the April 25 and May 12 earthquakes in Nepal has exceeded 8500, making it the worst recorded disaster in the country’s history. The death toll has now exceeded the toll in the 1934 earthquake that caused devastation across the Kathmandu Valley, and the damage to historic monuments and infrastructure has been described as a national tragedy. Aftershocks are continuing, as rescue workers struggle to deliver aid to remote areas and stabilise buildings damaged in the disaster.
