The government of Nepal has urged India to reconsider its project to build a 1700km highway along the India-Nepal border because of the risk of flooding. The east-to-west road will cross many of the rivers which flow down from the Himalaya towards the Indian plains, and Nepali officials fear that surges could cause the rivers to overflow where they are bottle-necked under bridges, leading to floods on the Nepali side of the border.
