Authorities in the Philippines have called for an investigation into an alleged ‘bullet scam’ at Manila's international airport following complaints from travellers.

The alleged scam sees bullets being placed in a passenger’s luggage, and the passenger then being forced to pay a fine after the bullets are ‘discovered’ during the security screening. In the two most recent reported incidents, a Japanese tourist was arrested for not having the appropriate authorisation for carrying ammunition after two bullets were found in his luggage, and an overseas Filipino worker detained after a bullet was found in her hand luggage.
