Nearly half of the 11,426 workers employed by resorts in the Maldives have signed a petition demanding a minimum wage of US$600 per month. Currently, the average wage stands at US$250 per month, yet most resorts charge guests upwards of US$400 per night for rooms. Tourism brings in vast amounts of money to the Maldives, but this is not reflected in the wages earned by ordinary Maldivians.
