Malé, the tiny capital of the Maldives, has been hit by widespread flooding following unusually high tidal swells.

The coastal ring road around the capital is under more than a foot of water, and many restaurants and cafes along the shorefront have also been flooded. High winds have been blamed for the swells, which forced seawater over the island’s coastal defences, but clean-up is underway and the government is not expecting lasting problems.
