Locals in Syracuse in southeastern Sicily are up in arms at a new proposal to build the ‘most luxurious resort in Europe’ on a stunning stretch of coastline south of the city, between the bays of Ognina and Fontane Bianche.

The proposed €120 million resort would measure 365 acres, with an 18-hole golf course, two artificial lakes and a helicopter pad. Local activists say it would ‘snatch the sea from residents yet again’, leaving the general public with access to just five acres of coastline. Syracuse’s mayor Giancarlo Garozzo has said that he is obligated to consider any project that would bring so much investment into the area, despite the fact that he was elected on an anti-construction platform, with the slogan ‘zero cement’.
