The Indian Museum in Kolkata has inaugurated a new exhibition exploring the role of Hindu gods and culture in Japan.
Although Japan is predominantly Shinto and Buddhist, many Japanese also revere Hindu deities such as Saraswati, Lakshmi, Indra, Brahma, Ganesha and Garuda, and ancient Hindu scripts such as Sanskrit and Siddham are still used for religious texts and iconography. The exhibition focuses on the photos of art-historian Benoy K Behl, who has conducted a long study of the cultural links between India and Japan, and will run until 21 January.
