Today is the first day of US Secretary of State John Kerry’s historic trip to Cuba, the first by a high-level American diplomat in 70 years, to officially inaugurate the opening of the US embassy on the island.
Kerry is scheduled to meet with a number of leaders and political activists throughout the day, and the flag-raising ceremony will feature speeches by notable politicians and a reading by poet Richard Blanco. The three marines who lowered the American flag at the embassy in 1961 will also be present. The embassy officially reopened nearly a month ago, but the flag-raising was reserved for Kerry’s visit this month.
