All that may be set to change if Japan gains approval to build India’s first bullet train line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. If it is approved, the new rail line will cut the journey time between the two cities from seven hours to two hours, but it will require eleven new tunnels, including an underwater tunnel to connect the islands that Mumbai sits on to the mainland. Funding for the project will come in the form of a soft loan from Japan at a 1% interest rate. China is currently preparing proposals for a similar bullet train between Delhi and Mumbai.
