A German man hoping to recover his abandoned yacht had his hopes dashed when he learnt it had been sunk by the Irish Navy.

Thomas Mallanut deserted his 25ft boat, named Troll, off the coast of Bermuda when his wife became ill. The pair boarded a passing tanker and he later heard that the boat, worth tens of thousands of pounds, had been sighted near the UK. It drifted 2,700 miles in 10 months, and Mallanut hoped to recover it off the coast of Cornwall. However, as the boat drifted past the Irish coast, the Irish navy was ordered to board and sink it as a hazard to shipping. Read more: telegraph.co.uk
